Room 417, Latish Monday Morning

Jack woke up, ran through Jill's memories, and said, "Huh." Then he got up and went to check Jill's frighteningly OCD wall calendar.

Yep. The little frowny faces that denoted Jacktime were still a week away. Weird, but he wasn't complaining. Jill would probably spaz, but that was in the future, so who cared? Maybe the cycle was...adjusting, or something. Whatever. The important thing was that Jill had thrown out his jar of peanut butter. Again.

He was going to have to do something to get back at her for that.

Harper had snuck out early while her roommate was still asleep to get breakfast. She returned to get a few things before class.

She blinked a few times at Jack before finding her voice. "You have the wrong room or something?"

Jack was suddenly really glad he'd put some clothes on. "Oh, no, I'm in the right...Harper, right? You're Jill's roommate. I'm Jack."

"Hi... Jack," said Harper, still a little confused. "Are you a student here? How come I haven't seen you around before?"

Jack did his best to look hurt. "Jill hasn't mentioned me? That is so like her."

Well, it was.

"Nope, she's never said a word about you," said Harper. "Um, are you her boyfriend or something like that?"

"No!" Jack said. "Ew! No, I'm her brother."

More or less.

"Oh! Sorry, it's just that she never mentioned you," said Harper. It was probably better that way, considering Harper's longtime crush on her best friend's brother.

"So, what are you doing here anyway? And where's Jill?"

Jack totally understood how that went, as he had a crush on his sort-of sister's best friend.

"She does that. She doesn't actually like me very much," he admitted. "I'm supposed to stand in for her, you know, while she's off for treatment. It's early this month. Uh, but when she gets back, it's probably best if you don't mention I was here. She's really sensitive about the whole arrangement, you know how girls are."

"Oooooh, I'll be sure not to say anything," promised Harper.

"Thanks." Jack flashed a grin at her. "I really appreciate that."

"It's no problem," said Harper. "Are you, um, going to be okay with sharing a room with a girl?"

"Oh, yeah," Jack said with a little laugh. "I share a room with Jill. At home, you know."

"Really? Wow. I'm an only child, so I've never really had to share much before," said Harper. "My best friend has two brothers, but she was able to get her own room at home. It was probably the safest for all involved. Alex and Justin already fight over everything else."

"Well, we're...twins." Really. Totally twins. "I'm used to sharing. Everything. It still sucks, though."

"I've always wondered what it would be like having a twin," said Harper. "Guess it sounds like it's more fun than it actually is."

"Yeah, it's...really not much fun at all," Jack said. "Jill gets most of everything."

"It really doesn't sound very fair," said Harper, frowning. She was starting to feel sorry for Jack.

"It's not," Jack said. "But that's how it is when you're a 'problem.' Unlike perfect Jill," he added bitterly. Then he forced a smile, to show it really didn't bother him. It was a poor smile.

The fake smile totally worked on Harper. "Well, if there's anything I can do to make you more comfortable while you're here, don't hesitate to ask," she said.

"Thanks, Harper," Jack said, with a more genuine grin. "I'll keep that in mind. Do you know where I can get some breakfast around here? Jill was supposed to leave me food, but she, you know, didn't."

"There's usually something in the common room. That's the cool thing about being on the fourth floor. There's so many people on this floor who can cook," said Harper, smiling.

"Common room," Jack echoed, and headed for the door. "I'll check that out. Thanks, Harper. You're the best."
