Room 417, Saturday Afternoon

Jill was bored. There was nothing on TV. Why was there never anything good on TV when she was bor--ooh, was that the Rock? She flipped back a few channels.

It was the Rock. And Karl Urban! Score!

Within about ten minutes, Jill had realized two, no, three things. One, this movie was not her taste at all. Jack probably would have liked it, though. Two, she thought it might be actually kind of terrible. Three, every time she decided she'd had enough and was changing the channel, the Rock or Karl Urban was going to come onscreen and destroy her resolve, so she was stuck with it.

Well, she figured it was this or Chef vs. City on Food Network, and this had way cuter guys. There were worse ways to spend an afternoon.

"They're both cool. Ms. David was really nice to me, that week with the vampires. And Professor Atreides rocks!" Even if she thought Dinah could do with less caffiene.

"And it is kinda violent." Dinah rolled over onto her stomach, legs lazily swinging in the air. "But, this place can get kinda violent. It's good to be prepared, you know?" She cocked her head. "Do you know any self-defense stuff?"

"Um," Jill said. "That's a big no. See I have this plan that involves hiding in the dorm until the crazy things go away."

"It's a good plan. Lots of people survive with that plan." Better than the other-her had, for instance. "But. What if you get caught outside?" Dinah gave Jill a worried look. "You'd call if you were in trouble, right?"

Jill hadn't realized not-surviving was a possibility... "I'll run and hide somewhere," she said decisively. "And call for help."

Dinah sighed, because talking her into anything more probably wasn't possible. At least not yet. "How are things with you and Jack, by the way? I missed him this last time around."

Jill was still operating too much on the 'normal small Massachusetts town' setting, sad to say.

She made a face. "He wants to cut my hair off again." Then she paused. "Well, no, that's not really true. If he wanted to cut my hair again he has access to scissors. But he left a bunch of pictures torn out of magazines of women with short hair on my bed."

Which worked for some people, after all. Dinah was just hoping it would keep working for Jill.

"Do you hate the idea 'cause he likes it, or do you hate the idea because you want long hair again?" Dinah asked, sneaking another cookie. "'Cause you know you still look really cute with short hair."

Jill frowned. "I don't know. I didn't want short hair in the first place, he just hacked it all off."

"Which blows. But maybe you can do something else... and at least he learned," Dinah pointed out. "He hasn't tried it again." She shook her head. "Any chance he actually called Ramie?"

Jill looked horrified. "Oh, God, I hope not."

"Have you talked to her?" Dinah wondered. "Just to say hi? And that it wasn't her, it was Jack ditching her? Because seriously. I feel sorry for her."

This was kind of weird, still, knowing Jack was listening,but...

Jill's eyes went wide. "I know, I know, I don't actually know what my mom told people, I guess I should ask, but--I cannot tell Ramie about this. I can barely deal with people here knowing I'm a freak, and this is weird central. Jeez, I don't even think I've told my roommate yet, poor Harper, God knows what she thinks."

"How the heck does she not know?" Dinah asked, totally diverted. "I mean, she's a little ... overfocused on clothes, but..."

"I don't know! Maybe she's a really sound sleeper?" Jill sighed. "I suck."

"You don't suck!" Dinah said, then added, "But it's maybe one of those things Harper would wanna know?"

"I know, I know, I keep meaning to tell her, it just...never comes up?"

"Better you than Jack. Although I guess if he were going to, he would've done it by now," Dinah said, brow wrinkling. And added, "Good going, Jack," since he was going to remember this. "Anyway. You going to try out for the play, or help out this term?"

"Maybe," Jill said. "I was thinking I need to start, like, looking for a job or something, you know? You work at the flower shop, right? How's that?"

"I do, yeah, and it's nice. Mostly pretty quiet, but there's always stuff to do, taking care of the plants and stuff." Dinah cocked her head. "The place got bought by a new owner about a month ago. Vida Boheme. Great shoes. Really kind of big personality."

"So that's cool," Jill said, even if she thought 'Vida Boheme' was kind of a weird name. "Not sure if I'm a plant girl, though. I just need something to do. The classes one day a week thing is great, I'm sure my friends back home would kill me from jealousy if they knew, you know, but I get bored. You know?"

"Totally know. I mean, I have the different work-outs and such too, but I ended up with no classes at the end of the week, and I'm almost glad tomorrow's class again, you know?" Dinah reached for another cookie, and added, "Miss Boheme's a transvestite, by the way. Just so you're not surprised."

Jill blinked. "Okay. Duly noted, thanks. Not the weirdest thing around here by a long shot," she said wryly. "Wait. What the hell just happened?" she asked as the movie suddenly went into first-person shooter mode. "Where did Karl Urban go?"

"Yeah, but I figured you'd want a head's up." Dinah blinked at the screen in disappointment. "Bring back Karl! C'mon!"

"Oh, this is such a ripoff," Jill grumbled at the screen. "He was half the reason your stupid movie was worth watching!"
